The criminal, being placed on the edge of the precipice, was then pushed backwards, so that he fell down the perpendicular height on the stone lying below: if not killed by the fall, the second witness dashed a large stone down upon his breast, and then the "people of the land," who were by-standers, rushed forward, and with stones completed the work of death ( Matthew 21:44, Acts 7:58 ).Ĥ. Verses 10-27 These verses repeat what had been said before, but it was needful there should be line upon line. Work out your salvation, for it is God that worketh in you. Yet his grace is so far from doing away our endeavours, that it strongly encourages them. It is the Lord that sanctifies, and his work will be done, though it be difficult. In the midst of these laws comes in a general charge, Sanctify yourselves, and be ye holy. If men will not avoid evil practices, because the law has made these practices sin, and it is right that we go on that principle, surely they should avoid them when the law has made them death, from a principle of self-preservation. Laws which were made before are repeated, and penalties annexed to them. But are there not very many parents, who, by bad teaching and wicked examples, and by the mysteries of iniquity which they show their children, devote them to the service of Satan, and forward their everlasting ruin, in a manner even more to be lamented? What an account must such parents render to God, and what a meeting will they have with their children at the day of judgment! On the other hand, let children remember that he who cursed father or mother was surely put to death. The lyrics came to his mind years later when he needed a hymn topic about holiness. A Christian musician read the poem, cut it out, and filed it for later use. He was able to get the poem published in a Christian periodical. In it he offers many applications that anyone can apply on “how to” become more holy like our Lord. His insights and gifts are reflected throughout the poem. It served him well when given a task to implement the details of a new venture. Longstaff was a successful businessman with a very practical mind. William Longstaff heard a sermon entitled “Be ye holy, for I am holy.” The preaching was based on the New Testament Bible verse I Peter 1:16: “Because is written, ‘Be ye holy: for I am holy.’” This is a thoroughly Biblical concept that comes over into the New Testament from the Old where the Scripture says: “Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God” Leviticus 20:7 (KJV).
